I Am – Bobby Tiwana/Sheffield Theatres

David worked on developing “I Am” in April 2016.
A theatre project produced by Bobby Tiwana in association with Sheffield Theatres, “I Am” is written by Carl Miller and directed by Kate Chapman.

Multi-Story Water: Seven Bridges

David co-devised and performed in this new site-responsive theatre-based piece in June 2015.

Growing out of the original 2012 “Multi-Story Water” theatre piece and developed from a concept originated by Stephen Bottoms, “Seven Bridges” reunited David with Lynsey Jones and Simon Brewis from the original “Multi-Story Water” piece, all of whom co-created and performed in the resulting piece.

The piece evolved into an interactive Labyrinth Theatre-based journey along a stretch of the Leeds-Liverpool canal in Shipley and was performed on 27th & 28th June 2015 as part of the 2015 Shipley Street Arts Festival. Plans for an extended large-cast version of “Seven Bridges” are in the pipeline, and other Multi-Story Water projects are being developed.

“Seven Bridges” was funded by the Arts and Humanties Research Council.

One For The Road at Esk Valley Theatre, 7th-30th August 2014

David played Dennis Cain in Willy Russell’s "One for the Road".

Set in 1980’s sprawling suburbia, the action centres around a dinner party at Dennis and Pauline Cain’s semi-detached dormer bungalow on the eve of Dennis’s 40th birthday.

He’s in the throes of a mid-life crisis – disillusioned with the conventional life he’s been saddled with and desperate to breakout. Pauline is more concerned with cooking to impress. The presence of upwardly-mobile Roger and Jane at the party and Dennis’s Olympic alcohol consumption combine to send the evening spiralling out of control and heading towards a revelation from Dennis that shatters the status quo…

“Esk Valley Theatre has chosen a good play and great actors – excellent theatre. Restless Dennis crouches on the sofa, leaps over it and lies on the floor completely unrelaxed – making actor David Smith mesmerising to watch.” – Emily Thwaite – Northern Echo

My Generation at West Yorkshire Playhouse, 5th-26th October 2013

David played Ritchie/Bug in My Generation at West Yorkshire Playhouse.

Set in Leeds, My Generation is the story of a family and a city through 40 years of alternative culture. From the fear, tension and radical feminism of Leeds during the Yorkshire Ripper, the disillusionment of the Miners’ Strike, the drug fuelled hedonism of the 90s and finally the instability and possibilities created by today’s economic crisis.

Heartbreak, betrayal and coming out scrapping when all you’ve got left is pride – My Generation follows people who tried to live differently.

Written by award-winning TV writer Alice Nutter, founder member of British band Chumbawamba, this new play was underscored live with an explosive mash-up of live popular music from the four decades, performed by the cast and house band.
